Ligaments · muscles · tendons

Sprain and strain are not interchangeable.

The distinction helps explain what was injured, what a clinician examines, and how recovery is documented.

01

Sprain

A sprain involves a ligament—the connective tissue that joins bone to bone and stabilizes a joint. Sprains range from stretching to partial or complete tears.

02

Strain

A strain involves muscle, the muscle–tendon junction, or tendon. Symptoms can include pain, spasm, weakness, swelling, and reduced function.

03

The record beyond a diagnosis

A label alone does not show impact. Record range-of-motion findings, prescribed restrictions, missed work, follow-up recommendations, and the daily tasks you cannot perform normally. Ask the treating clinician what warning signs require urgent care.
